I bought this sharpener for my classroom because the box said it was powerful and quiet, and it sold for around in the office store where I got it (but it was on sale for .) It is powerful, but it isn’t at all quiet. You have to hold on tightly to the pencil, because the sharpener tries to turn it in your hand. It has suction cups on the bottom that hold it really stable, which is a plus. Overall, though, my sharpener that I’ve had for years is quieter and just as able to to the job, except that it’s too dull to use now. This one does the job, but it’s not fun to use. I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for smooth handling and a quiet ride.

I am a elementary school teacher and this sharpener only lasted me a year and a half. It wont sharpen certain pencils…it eats brand new ones too. It worked well for about 6 months and then after that, it became a hassle.

The book is laid out beautifully. The 50 plants are listed by rank based on removal of chemical vapors, ease of maintenance, resistance to insect infestation, and transpiration rate. Each plant gets a two-page spread; one page discusses the plant’s ideal environment, sunlight conditions, care, and general information about the plant along with a full photo of it. The next page has a zoomed-in full-page photo of the leaves and/or flowers so the reader gets a feel for what the plant looks like and how it will fit with their decor.The book begins by discussing the research about the air purification qualities of houseplants. The initial chapters explain how air contaminates enter our homes, the adverse effects these toxins have on humans, and how plants remove the contaminates from the air. I was surprised to learn that common household items such as blankets, toys, gas stoves, computers, and carpets can lead to allergies, asthma, even cancer, and that they might contribute to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Once I read how certain plants can remove these dangerous microbes from the air, my husband and I immediately discussed adding these plants to our home.The author explains in great detail how to care for the plants, which I found very helpful as a novice indoor gardener. The author also details the specific toxins that different plants remove, and indicates whether the plants transpire at night (which is good for a bedroom) or during the day.

This is a beautifully put-together book focusing on a unique aspect of plant ownership. Entries include both a full-on picture of a healthy, attractively potted specimen, plus a close-up detail of leaves &/or flowers. Descriptions of plant care are concise, well organized and accompanied by a more generalized description of the plant and particulars. Each plant is rated on four characteristics (removal of chemical vapors, ease of growth & maintenance, resistance to insect infestation, & transpiration rate), using an easy to read bar chart which appears on the same page as the description & picture.This book is an excellent addition to an avid collector’s plant library, both for its curiosity value & beautiful coverage of basic houseplants, and doubtless of interest to people concerned about air quality as well. It also provides enough basic information on each plant to be a useful reference for beginning enthusiast, but I would qualify that by saying that newbies will probably want a more broadly based work as their first home reference guide. For people looking for gift books, the pictures & layout are lovely.

Well, it looked great, nice and compact, BUT within one week, a fishy smell developed in the corner where the outlet was. When I researched fishy smells in houses, surprisingly, electrical problems came up. So, when I pulled out the plug (where the surge protector plugs into the wall,) the plug was melting and burning, and, in fact, left its metal prongs in our outlet! So, by unplugging it, our house didn’t burn down (a good thing), but now we have an unusable outlet until we get an electrician in (a bad thing.) Buyer beware! Btw, we’ve used Belkin surge protectors for YEARS in the same outlet with NO PROBLEM; I think it’s just this model/design that’s faulty.

This surge protector allows for up to 8 devices, including 4 ‘wide’ DC adapters to be plugged in. It will protect them against power surges and, in addition, it can protect one phone line (RJ-11) and one coax wire if they are connected to pass through the Belkin surge protector.

My personal experience does validate the claims the manufacturer makes for the features that I am using and I can verify at this time. So far, I am happy and, in my opinion and based on its meeting real needs, good design, features and low price I recommend it as (in my view) one of the better it its class.

Soon after purchasing this unit I learned that for very little extra I could get and, in fact, I purchased the Belkin 12-Outlet Home/Office Surge Protector with Phone/Ethernet/Coaxial Protection and Extended Cord which has 4 extra outlets and comes with a true RJ-45 Ethernet support.

The following are noteworthy, in my view.

Positives:

+ TRUE 8-outlet capacity. Unlike the traditional surge-protected power strips where one beefy AC adapter would cover 2 slots, Belkin’s device truly accommodates 4 AC adapters and allows for 4 more plugs to fit in.

+ ‘Protected’ green light (must be on) provides assurance that the surge protector is operational. When the green light stays off it usually means that the surge protector ‘expired’ while protecting your device from a power surge and it must be replaced ASAP. [The Belkin warranty promises a free replacement under its warranty terms if you meet the requirements and, it seems, you pay for shipping the damaged unit to Belkin and, possibly, the new unit to you. That's likely to add up to the price of buying a new unit from Amazon and, if you factor in the hassle, probably not worth it.]

+ ‘Not grounded’ red light (must be off) will warn you when there’s something wrong. Belkin’s warranty won’t apply if the light was on when your devices got fried. I don’t know if for a fact but I assume they have a way of telling if that was the case.

+ 10 ft. long chord. This is very important to me and it was one of the criteria that had to be met when I ordered this item.

+ 90 degree plug allows you to easily plug it into a busy 4-plugs wall outlet.

+ Clip for cable management. I find it useful.

+ Thin (one inch) and flat shape. Stands well on a table or on the floor.

+ Telephone and coax cable pass through for surge protection. I don’t use these but I’m surprised that something this inexpensive has them.

[NOTE: The 'phone' jacks are RJ-11 (phone), not RJ-45 (Ethernet). I heard of installations where RJ-11 connectors are used for Ethernet but that is not the norm.]

Negatives:

- Other than encouraging the unrealistic expectation that Belkin would pay you big $$$ on connected equipment warranty, I can’t think of anything bad.

On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is a worthless warranty and 10 is one that’s unbelievably generous, Belkin’s should be somewhere around 2 or 3 – 95% of all warranties on devices this cheap are likely to be a 1.

They do promise to replace the item if it sacrifices itself while protecting your devices for as long as you can prove that you didn’t do anything stupid, you have a purchase receipt and you ship the damaged item to Belkin at your own expense. It’s not clear if they will charge you for shipping you back a new item. This may or may not be something worth pursuing. My impression is that you are not going to save a lot of money to get a ‘free’ replacement from Belkin and you are likely to waste a lot of time in the process. I’d probably buy myself a new one if the one I have now stopped working but it’s good to know that they do have a ‘lifetime’ warranty. By ‘lifetime’ they mean the natural life of the product but ‘natural life’ is not precisely defined.

As far as being reimbursed for damage to devices that this surge protector was expected to protect, my impression is that you are not likely to get much if anything unless you can afford a lawyer and you are willing to sue. You have to meet a long series of requirements that are expressed in several paragraphs of techno-legalese.

I will have to repeat myself stating that, in my view, this is one of the better surge protectors in its class. It loses one star for the ‘Ethernet’ confusion. I could have and maybe I should have removed one more star from the over-hyped warranty statement printed on the box but… as sad as it is, everybody does it and Belkin’s warranty is better than most so, I am awarding 4 stars on an item that inexpensively addressed real issues I had with protecting several devices clustered in a corner of my basement.

Two of the units we bought took a hit from lightning a few days after buying it-they protected the PCs connected to it but they were also burned up–2 huge holes; we were “lucky” a fire didn’t start. So the surge protectors did there job but they also failed because they almost burned up–that’s why I only gave them a 3 star rating instead of a 5.

I found this book to be of great value even though I used it in the hunt for a good position in the civilian world and not within the government.

A friend in the “G” gave me a copy of this book and told me that it was “hilarious.” Granted, Ms. Whiteman has some funny cartoons in it and her style is an easy read. But more importantly, gave me the get-up-and-go attitude to put on my game face and apply for jobs with more than a modicum of confidence.

The book comes with a CD of resume templates and other useful cheat sheets, if you will. It helped me get my career organized in a tidy, presentable fashion. It also inspired me to produce some attention-grabbing cover letters that conveyed my skills persuasively and attractively in my application packets. After studying it, too, I felt that I was prepared for interviews, or I was after I conducted the practice sessions that she suggests where someone sits and asks you potential questions. It makes you think on your feet!

“How to Land a Top-Paying Federal Job” made a world of difference in helping me stay away from vague and long-winded answers and I was finally able to connect with prospective employers, including the one that actually hired me just last week. Whew.

I would really recommend this book to any harried jobseeker, whether they want to work for the government or a company. And I plan on using it again in my efforts to move up in the world for an even better position down the road.

How I wish this book had been around when I began my federal service more than 20 years ago. For the first time, a book exists that compiles all the information candidates need to apply for their first federal job, or to apply for a better job if they are already in the system. What my husband and I found especially helpful are the worksheets. It is so much easier to write about a work experience using these outlines. It ensures that the narrative will follow a logical structure and reminded us not to leave out the most important points. With this book, my husband was able to revise his application into a much stronger document and I have updated my resume and related documents to be a step ahead for the next opportunity.
